English as a Second Language: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Conversation
I have taught several university level courses (e.g. leadership and the college student; language, literature, and rhetoric; advanced ESL), and assisted several more (e.g. Chicano theater, philosophy of love and human sexuality, theatrical traditions, acting and performance in film). I have a year and a half of ESL experience abroad--1 year in Seoul, and 6 months across Lima and Barcelona). I have tutored elementary through high school students in Los Angeles and New York City for a current total of 3 years. I have two years of experience counseling graduate students as they write seminar papers, journal articles, and dissertations.
I understand each student has individual strengths, weaknesses, study habits, interests, and a foundation of knowledge sets. Whether elementary level or lifelong learners, I use student personalities and goals help me create dynamic transmedial exercises, games, and practical work that can be immediately applied to their everyday exchanges. My goals remain the same across assignments: to foster critical thinking; to foreground learning as a skill, not a chore; and to posit through demonstration that both are natural means to develop—not displace or discredit—what the student already knows.
Experience: 7 years
This course is centered on individual students and their interests and goals. A class for a conversation-level student looking to hone their speaking for job purposes will look very different from one around a beginner just wanting to learn the words to the newest pop song.
Regardless of level, we will cover: reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening. We will use a variety of resources and media, with dynamic assignments, interactive elements, and prepared presentations.
