Learning Collaborator: Reaching Reading and Writing Goals
I have received a bachelor's degree in English and Secondary Education at The College of New Jersey.
Experience: 1 years
The most effective teacher learns alongside her student. Whenever I approach any kind of teaching, or tutoring, responsibility, I make sure that I am just as much a part of the learning process as the person who is looking to me for guidance. It takes time and effort to really understand another individual's interests, abilities, and strengths, and just as much time to apply these learning styles to any given material.
Thus, my own consistent and constant education begins with my role as a student. During my time at The College of New Jersey, I have received the Dean's Award for Excellence in the Liberal Arts, as well as a nomination for the Student Teacher of the Year (for the state of NJ). I have my bachelor's degree in English and Secondary Education, finishing my senior year with a GPA of 3.8. I have had experience with research specifically regarding pedagogy, and I have used my knowledge of educational practices and my advanced writing abilities to publish an article in a journal. However, my most important experiences have certainly been in the field itself. I have participated and led an after-school SAT tutoring prep program at a local high school, and I have just successfully completed a semester of student teaching at a high school, working as an English Language Arts teacher with students from sophomore inclusion classes to senior honors classes. I have also recently accepted a position as a 10th grade English teacher at a local high school.
I am fortunate that I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of learners, from struggling sophomores attempting to write a persuasive piece to particularly advanced seniors polishing their final college application essays, or preparing to take their last SAT exam. I have had to apply a diverse range of differentiation strategies to meet the needs of all of my students. I never use the "one size fits all" approach to reading and writing--rather, I use extensive assessment strategies to uncover learning style most suitable for my students and help individual learn and grow in a way that works FOR THEM. If you're looking for a tutor who has proven herself to be a successful in her field and is willing to take an individualized approach to a teaching (and learning), I'm the teacher for you!
