Who was Erik Satie?
I am a PhD student of musicology at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade and explaining different musical styles is my profession. I've been a teaching assistant at my University for three years now and have had a lot of experience in holding lectures on subjects from music history.
Experience: 4 years
This lesson is envisioned as a tour through life and music of a French composer Erik Satie, whose music keeps fascinating listeners and performers alike. Satie was a typical example of a French dandy. He lived in Paris at the turn of the century, he visited cabarets, played the piano in bars, he was weird and eccentric and he made music that was amazingly simple and beautiful, inspired by the everyday life and popular music.
In order to understand this man better, I will speak about the political situation in France at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and explain why Satie’s music was considered outrageous at the time. Satie was a funny man; some say even a crazy man. I intend to share some insights about his life and career that will shed some light on a man who admired simplicity and brevity in time when people thought music should be as complicated as possible and last for hours and hours.
