Language Learning Breaks Barriers
|languages||English, French, Japanese, Spanish|
I started my formal education in the country of my birth, Barbados at the age of 3. I attended St. Catherine's Primary School from 1986 to 1994. At the age of 11 , I went on to attend the Combermere School, one of the most prominent high schools on the island. There, I succeeded in my O and A Levels and started on my linguistic career. After graduating high school in 2001, I started my BA in French and Spanish at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. I graduated and started my teaching career. However, to further develop my career, I did an intensive one month course at Oxford House College in London where I received my CELTA; a certificate in teaching english to speakers of other languages.
Experience: 11 years
Hello my name is Tonya Brathwaite. I enjoy traveling and meeting people from various cultures, languages and backgrounds. My passion is to learn from others while sharing my knowledge and experience to improve the lives of many. This is probably why I've gravitated to teaching. I've been teaching languages for over 11 years.
During that period I've not only taught English in France, Japan and the Caribbean but I've taken advantage of the opportunies to explore other European and Asian countries. There, my knowledge of and appreciation for differences were nourished. I also learned the importance of tailoring certain teaching techniques to meet the needs of certain students since teaching methods differ according to country and culture.
My formal training from CELTA and experience as a teacher have further taught me to be adaptable to different environments and people. I have learnt to identify the challenges that certain language groups may encounter when speaking English and to employ the tools to help them succeed. As a student of foreign languages, I understand the difficulty involved in learning a foreign language and so, I patiently but effectively help students to develop their skills in English while maintaining a fun environment conducive for learning.
I am looking forward to assisting you in achieving your goals.
