Biostatistics is the application of statistics to a wide range of topics in biology. It encompasses the design of biological experiments, especially in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture and fishery; the collection, summarization, and analysis of data from those experiments; and the interpretation of, and inference from, the results. A major branch is medical biostatistics, which is exclusively concerned with medicine and health. Lessons are in biostatistics and genetics, biostatistics and medicine, research planning (research question, hypothesis definition, sampling, experimental design, data collection), analysis and data interpretation (descriptive tools, inferential statistics), statistical considerations (power and statistical error, p-value, multiple testing, mis-specification and robustness checks, model selection criteria), developments (use in high-throughput data), and applications (public health, quantitative genetics, expression data, other studies). Students must advise as to what their purposes are (whether course work, paper writing, etc). I have five years in this kind of tutoring.
